Critical Appraisal of an Aerospace Grade Aluminium Alloy
Characterisation of Material
This project involved a technical evaluation of an aluminium casting alloy, as part of a larger project by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants to value the company that had patented the alloy. Since the alloy was cast, some (justifiable) concerns were raised regarding the suitability of the alloy for use in the aerospace industry (where strict tolerances on mechanical integrity are imposed).
The evaluation involved a thorough review of all relevant documentation, including patent applications, scientific literature and extensive mechanical testing data (yield stress, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, fracture toughness, fatigue data, stress corrosion cracking data and precipitation hardening behaviour). The evaluation was used to enable our client to more reliably value the company.
