Finite Element Analysis and Characterisation of Material
Our client would like to understand more clearly the source of permanent distortions that can sometimes develop in extruded PVC-U door and window frames.
Recognising a strong dependency on temperature, our client instructed Double Precision Associates to develop and experimentally validate a heat transfer finite element model to predict temperature transients and steady-state thermal fields in a problematic component. The model was used subsequently in a sensitivity analysis to study how sensitive the thermal fields were to radiative and convective heat losses, and to alternative PVC recipes with different values of thermal diffusivity.
The data that emerged has been used to justify the acceptance of over 100,000 metres of extruded profile that would otherwise have been rejected by the business at the quality assurance stage.
